Autumn Courses

Adult Learning Patterns and Applications

Schedule: (7 sessions) Saturdays, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.,
Oct. 10-Dec. 5, 2009 (no class Oct. 31 or Nov. 28), $495; 2.1 CEUs.

Instructor: Aimee Windmiller-Wood

This course explores the key theories of adult learning, and practical applications to the real world of an organization. Topics include:

  • Application of adult learning theories to human resources development
  • Characteristics of the adult learner
  • Facilitating the instruction of adults
  • The variety of factors that affect adult learning
  • Historic theories and current understanding of adult learning

Overview of the Training Function

Schedule: (7 sessions) Saturdays, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Oct. 10-Dec. 5, 2009 (No class Oct. 31 or Nov. 28), $495; 2.1 CEUs.

Instructor: David Adams

This course provides an introduction to the training function in an organizational environment. Topics include:

  • The roles and responsibilities of trainers and the training function
  • Why organizations invest resources in training
  • Why needs assessments are done
  • How organizations determine if training was effective
  • Competencies of trainers, including self-assessment
  • Current trends in the training profession

Winter Courses

This course focuses on the major steps and skills needed for effective curriculum/ training program and course design. It covers all phases in designing and developing training programs, emphasizing needs assessment. Participants will design a training program for specific organizational needs. Topics include:

  • Undertaking needs assessments
  • Writing learning objectives
  • Designing formats and course materials
  • Managing evaluation and measurement
  • Developing effective learning experiences

This course examines performance analysis as the basis of training intervention selection and design. Participants will explore a variety of training strategies, delivery methods and technologies. Participants will write and present a performance analysis report. Topics include:

  • Conducting performance analysis
  • Determining criteria for selecting training interventions
  • Matching delivery strategies to learning objectives
  • Linking delivery interventions to performance improvement
  • Introduction to "cutting edge" delivery methods including e-learning

This course emphasizes the training professional as a strategic business partner. It provides a systemic approach, from pre-training collaboration with line managers and executives to creating a post-training follow-through management system in order to achieve tangible business results. Topics include:

  • Constructing systems that support workplace learning before & after training
  • Creating a training proposal that will make a lasting impact
  • Documenting results from training
  • Understanding the basics of ROI (Return on Investment)

This course helps participants develop their ability to facilitate training and presentations in a multitude of adult teaching/facilitating situations. Participants have the opportunity to prepare and critique videotaped presentations. Topics include:

  • Dealing with problem situations in the classroom
  • Developing coaching skills
  • Facilitating the group process and encouraging feedback
