Autumn Course

Held at UW Extension in downtown Seattle, includes field trips to local studios.

Introduction to Audio Production

Schedule:(16 sessions) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-9 p.m., Oct. 13-Dec. 10, 2009 (no class Nov. 24, Nov. 26); $1149; 4.8 CEUs.
Instructor: David Miles Huber and Scott Colburn

This course introduces principles and tools of audio recording technology, beginning with the physics and terminology of sound. Through lectures and demonstrations of acoustics, microphones, analog and digital recording, signal processing, MIDI and synchronization, you'll understand the elements of sound production.

Trips to local sound studios provide insight into how a sound project for music, video and film is brought together. The instructor demonstrates how project plans are developed and priced,as well as the basics of mixing, storage media, and the mastering process.


Winter Course

Held in a local sound recording studio.

Audio Production in the Studio

Schedule: (8 sessions) Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, 6-9 p.m., beginning Jan. 4-March 12, 2010; $1149; 2.4 CEUs.

Beginning in the second term, the program shifts to the audio studio and working with an audio engineer/instructor. This course provides demonstrations of music, video and film production recording including multi-track recording and overdubs, signal processing, editing and mixing, and mastering techniques. You will learn about the software-based production essential to the creation of digital audio files for internet and interactive applications. Individual access to a computer and editing software enhance learning, but are not required. Limited hands-on is provided in the studio.


Spring Courses

Students complete sound production projects under the direction of the instructor in the studio.

Audio Production Project

Schedule: (8 sessions) Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday; 6-9 p.m. beginning Mar. 30, 2010; $1149; 2.4 CEUs.
Instructors: Glenn Lorbecki, Scott Colburn, Scot Charles and Jason Devore

Students work in small project teams to complete either a music production or film/video post-production project. Enrollment in each project track is limited to a maximum of seven students for hands-on work, on a first-come, first-served basis in order of enrollment in the course.

Music Production Track – Students work with professional musicians from pre-production, microphone selection and placement, recording/editing/mixing, through mastering and archival.

Film/Video Post-Production Track – Students mix the film or video soundtrack by developing Foley cue sheets, adding sound effects, selecting music, and transferring the final mix to video tape.

Peter Barnes will be presenting on the Business of Audio Production on April 19 and 26.


Optional Workshop

The following workshop is optional and is not required to complete the Audio Production Certificate Program.

Sound Gathering on Location (optional workshop)

Students meet during a six-hour Saturday session conducted at a field location, in which the instructor demonstrates the use of basic audio tools on location, including a portable DC mixer, radio lav microphones, a boom mic, headsets, and cabling. Topics covered include live micing techniques, problem solving for environmental noise challenges, selection of proper microphones for the given assignment, and proper gain staging and level setting for feeding various video cameras and audio recorders.
