A First-Year (Level I) Writers' Program Approved by the UW English Department and UW Department of Communication This winter, UW Extension is pleased to offer the Nonfiction Writers Certificate Program in a compressed, six-month format in Bellevue (the program is also offered in a nine-month format in Seattle). Designed for those who wish to complete the certificate in just over six months, the program meets one evening per week (plus two Saturdays, February 7 and May 9) and prepares students to write and submit their work to a variety of newspapers, magazines, or book publishers. The program is taught by Jim Molnar, a veteran writer whose nonfiction, fiction and photographic work has appeared in more than 50 newspapers, several anthologies and exhibitions, and has merited a score of national and international awards. The program uses lectures, exercises, readings, and hands-on projects to define and illustrate effective interviewing and research techniques, plus basic organizational approaches for genres including travel, science, humor, profiles, reviews, and how-to. Shorter- and intermediate-length assignments lead to the program's centerpiece: a publishable, feature-length article, personal essay, or book chapter. Notable writers appear as guest speakers.
