Literary Fiction I: Foundations

Through lectures, writing assignments, readings, and discussions, you become comfortable with the process of writing, familiar with the fundamental tools of the writer, and connected to the writing community. In this first course, you cover the main points of technique, including plotting, character development, and point-of-view; you also complete a story sketch, a complete story beginning, a plot chart, and a complete polished draft of a story.


Winter Course

Literary Fiction I: IntermediateClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Based on elements introduced during the first course, the intermediate class combines readings, lectures, discussions, and workshops that help you gain greater control of your stories. You will continue to write new work, while developing your editing skills and exploring more subtle shades of narrative craft such as mood, pace, authority, imagery, and structure.

This course helps you draft and revise your fiction, develop further expertise as a reader, writer, and editor, and discover the pleasures of your art in a small community of advanced students. You will strengthen your skills in working with narrative voice, dialogue, uses of time, and other facets of writing. Learn how to research markets and prepare your manuscript for submissions. Conferencing and critique of your work by the instructor and other students are key elements of this course.
