International students on F-1 student visas are welcome to participate in this Summer Intensive program. However, there may be some English language proficiency requirements that must be fulfilled. For details see Admission Requirements on the How to Apply page).

We also offer a two-quarter, evening program in Winter/Spring (the evening program does not meet INS regulations for students on F-1 student visas).

Do you need to sharpen your understanding of business fundamentals? Are you a manager who creates business plans or works with marketing? Do you need to redesign a process or double your productivity? Are you an entrepreneur looking for a program that will prepare you to create a great business plan and secure funding? Or, are you a graduate student in engineering or the sciences who expects to have team management responsibilities and would like a graduate credit program to complement your masters or Ph.D. degree?

No matter your situation, our Summer Intensive Certificate Program in Business Administration (CBA) will increase your understanding of business basics and help you reach your goals. A 15 credit certificate course, Essentials of Business meets 4 days a week during Summer quarter. You will gain comprehensive knowledge of core concepts of business that is essential to new ventures and existing organizations alike. You can also fine-tune your leadership skills while you earn a University of Washington Certificate in Business Administration (CBA).

After mastering ten core business topics (see Course Topics), you will learn to develop and present a comprehensive business plan for a new venture, or conduct a business analysis of an existing firm or strategic business unit. The summer program, when feasible, emphasizes a business plan of an international undertaking. By the end of the summer you will be able to:

  • Conduct a strategic business analysis;
  • Develop a corporate mission, vision and value statements;
  • Complete a market feasibility analysis and develop a marketing plan;
  • Evaluate a company's financial position, including its cash flow, credit position and liquidity;
  • Access and evaluate human resource issues;
  • Interpret and analyze business financial statements;
  • Determine an appropriate legal structure for the new venture;
  • Have an understanding of basic business law

Individuals in many different types of organizations benefit from this program, including those in large multi-business enterprises, entrepreneurships, manufacturing and service sector enterprises, publicly held profit-seeking corporations, and non-profit organizations.

The program is particularly useful to:

  • Mid-level managers who need an overview of business practices;
  • Professionals (lawyers, architects, building construction managers) who need training in business to operate their businesses more successfully;
  • Graduate students (education administration, nursing administration, library sciences, marine sciences, building construction, technology, engineering) who wish to prepare for today's business-oriented world;
  • International students who want an overview of American business practices (program meets INS regulations for students on F-1 student visas);
  • Health care professionals (physicians, nurses, dental hygienists, dentists, veterinarians, administrators) who wish additional training in business operations;
  • Prospective or practicing entrepreneurs who want to develop or refine their business analysis and planning skills

Program Schedule

Classes meet Monday–Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m., June 22–August 21, 2008 (no class July 4), on the UW campus, Seattle. Tuition is $2,999.
