Job prospects for professionals involved in the accounting function have grown significantly since the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in 2002. Opportunities for accountants rank second among occupations projected to be in the most demand in Washington state over the next several years, according to the current Washington State Occupational Handbook.

This 18-credit certificate program is designed for non-accounting managers and professionals seeking technical accounting skills to enhance their employability or advance their careers. Professionals in such areas as banking, financial management, insurance, information technology, investing, and others may benefit from this program.

The program emphasizes the use, as well as the preparation, of accounting information, providing an efficient way to acquire the technical accounting knowledge characteristic of an accounting major. Examples are presented for a variety of for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Program Benefits

  • Strengthen your managerial competency
  • Solidify your knowledge of accounting associated with related functions, such as regulatory reporting, budgeting, information technology, operations, and sales
  • Acquire technical accounting knowledge
  • Prepare for professional certification exams

Program Schedule

Classes meet Monday–Friday, from approximately 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., June 23–August 28, 2008 (no class on July 4), on the UW campus in Seattle. There is a morning lecture and an afternoon lecture, each from 90 to 120 minutes in length. Students may study or consult with teaching assistants during the break between lectures.

This summer intensive program is most appropriate for experienced business managers, lawyers, MBA students and recent business graduates. Applicants should be able to allocate 10 weeks during the summer to full-time studies.

Professional Certifications

Individuals completing this program may be interested in sitting for a professional certification. Web-links are provided here for your convenience.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA). See cpaboard.wa.gov for CPA exam requirements. The 18 graduate credits in Accounting (Evening) convert to 27 "equivalent" quarter-hour credits for the CPA exam in Washington. Please note, there are additional prerequisites to sit for the CPA exam and a CPA review course is highly recommended as well.

Certified Management Accountant (CMA). See imanet.org for CMA exam requirements. Although graduate level courses are not required as an educational prerequisite, Accounting (Evening) covers about 65-70% of the material on the CMA exam. A CMA review course is highly recommended as well.
