Are you currently active in community development or do you want to begin a related career? The nine-month UW Community Development certificate program will familiarize you with the history, purpose and breadth of this growing field.
Leading local practitioners and UW faculty will provide 90 hours of classroom instruction geared toward building your skills in community organizing, neighborhood assessment, and organizational development. You will learn how to share effective tools for neighborhood revitalization, poverty reduction, and real estate development.
Through case studies, guest speakers, mentors, and work on a project, you will become familiar with local issues, organizations, and resources. You will also be exposed to innovative models from other places. By the end of the program, you will have a good understanding of the many facets of community development and how they interconnect. You will be better prepared to engage with diverse communities, and you will be ready to help community organizations survive and thrive in today's rapidly changing environment.
Is This Program Right for You?
To apply to the Community Development Certificate Program, you must have a Bachelor's degree or evidence of involvement in some aspect of community development. A letter of application describing interest in the field is also required. To earn the certificate, students are expected to successfully complete six consecutive courses, each consisting of five evening classes, while maintaining at least 80 percent attendance.
