You can enroll in this program before the beginning of Autumn, Winter, Spring, or Summer quarters. All courses are offered as group start to provide opportunities for student-to-student interaction. In addition, courses in the program are offered at least two quarters per year, with Current Issues on Aging offered every quarter, providing multiple opportunities for students to complete the program. Social and Cultural Aspects of Aging (UCONJ 442, 3 credits) Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Draws upon material from many of the social sciences to examine the range and variation in institutions, attitudes and cultural values related to aging. This course emphasizes social and economic factors that influence elders in different cultures. Students learn about the effects of ethnic and sex differences on aging, and cross-cultural variations in the perception and treatment of the aged.

Instructor: Barbara Cochrane

Introductory material on aspects of biology of human aging and functional changes associated with normal aging, including those illnesses that may be present in older people. This course focuses on the relationship between changes in physical function, environment and quality of life, and includes theoretical perspectives on aging, as well as the aging process in specific physiological systems. An introductory course in biology is recommended as a prerequisite.

Focuses on developing the skills necessary for critically evaluating current psychological theories of aging, research findings in this area, and the implications of these for the aged person. Special consideration is given to effects of health and socioeconomic factors upon the psychological processes of aging. The implications of various psychological changes upon the aged individual's daily functioning are also examined.
